Synopsis

July 2006. A war breaks out in Lebanon, a new war but not just one more war. A war that crushes the hopes of peace and the dynamism of our generation.
We no longer know what to write, what stories to recount, what images to show. We ask ourselves: “What can cinema do?” That question, we decide to translate it into reality. We go to Beirut with an “icon”, an actress who, to us, symbolizes cinema, Catherine Deneuve. She will meet our preferred actor, Rabih Mroué. Together, they will drive through the regions devastated by the conflict. Through their presence, their meeting, we hope to find the beauty which our eyes no longer perceive. It is the beginning of an unpredictable, unexpected adventure…

Joana Hadjithomas :

Key figure of contemporary Lebanese cinema, along with Khalil Joreige, with whom she has worked in partnership since the beginning of her career, Joana Hadjithomas studied (already with Joreige) in France and in the USA. She (and Koreige of course) both graduated from the University of Nanterre and, later, from New York (in Film Direction). Hadjithomas and Joreige worked between Paris and Beirut, making shorts first, then features from 1999 on. Their work is a favorite of the Festival circuit and has received several awards, notably the “Montgolfière d’Argent” for A Perfect Day (2005). Their theme is invariably modern Lebanon, from its reconstruction in their satiric first feature film Around the Pink House (1999) to the new destructions of the 2006 Israel-Hezbollah War as witnessed by Catherine Deneuve in I Want to See (2008).
