Synopsis

A Parisian fugitive from the 1871 Commune of Paris uprising, Babette, a fine cook, is taken into the poor fishing village home of two puritanical spinsters who consider food beyond oatmeal almost sinful. When Babette by chance comes into money, she blows it all on serving up the ultimate gourmet meal for the dazed villagers. Based on the Isak Dinesen (Karen Blixen) tale.

Born in 1918, Denmark. Axel spent most of his childhood in France. Returning to Denmark, he trained as an actor at the Royal Danish Theatre. After some years in Paris, working with the Louis Jouvet theatre ensemble, Axel concentrated his efforts on directing for the theatre, television and film in Denmark.
With some 16 feature films to his credit — including “The Red Mantle” (1967), which received the Grand Prix de la Technique at the Cannes Film Festival, Axel returned to France where he directed several big projects for television, bringing him a number of distinguished honors. In 1988, Gabriel Axel won an Academy Award for his Danish feature film “Babette’s”(1987), an adaptation of Karen Blixen’s novel of the same name.
