Albert returns to town with his traveling circus and attempts to get back his estranged wife Agda vainly. His envious mistress, Anne, a voluptuous horseback rider, strikes back and flirts with Franz, an actor who would only exploit her. Albert is informed about Anne’s sexual peccadillo and in a moment of rage, he challenges Franz to a fight.
“The fact that Åke Grönberg played Albert, and that the part was expressly written for him, has nothing to do with any influence from Dupont’s film Variety with Emil Jannings. It’s much simpler than that: if a scrawny director aims for a self-portrait, of course he chooses a fat actor to play himself.”
