After a performance on stage, Swedish actress Elisabet Vogler becomes mute. She is assigned to an isolated cottage by the sea with a young nurse, Alma, to take care of her. As the women spend some time together, Alma does all the talking and eventually opens up about some intimate secrets to Elisabet who sympathize with her. Soon Alma finds herself get immersed into her patient’s persona.
