Synopsis

Professor Isak Borg, a bacteriology physician, goes on a car ride to receive an honorary award in Lund. His pregnant daughter-in-law Marianne accompanies him to the university. On the way, they meet several hitchhikers who, through a series of reveries and nightmares remind Professor Borg of his unsettling past.
