48e Semaine de la Critique
Cannes 2009

L'association Metropolis Cinéma accueille de nouveau la Semaine de la Critique pour sa 48e  édition.

Cet événement, co-organisé avec la  Mission Culturelle Francaise, en collaboration avec Beirut DC, offre pour la  cinquième année consécutive au public libanais, le plaisir de découvrir, en  avant-première à Beyrouth, 6 longs métrages, 8 courts métrages et un  moyen métrage sélectionnés au tout dernier Festival de  Cannes.

Des films de nature et de style toujours différents, des  cinéastes affirmant avec singularité leur manière de voir un monde en pleine  effervescence.

Un film français tendre aux allures de Western (Adieu  Gary), une journée dans la famille rurale du Sud du Chili (Huacho),  un regard fort et plein d’humanité sur une Lost Persons Área, une  nouvelle digne des frères Coen transposée dans un village sud américain  (Mal dia para pescar), un magnifique poème visuel venu du Kurdistan  irakien (Whisper with the wind), une fiction éclatée sur plusieurs  continents à la recherche d’un ré-enchantement du monde (Altiplano) et  une réflexion sur le paradoxal état de violence “en apensanteur” porté par  Vincent Gallo et dominé par la musique d’Anthony and the Johnsons  (1989).

7 séances, chacune précédée d’un court métrage, pour  découvrir de jeunes cinéastes, puisque c’est là la mission de la Semaine de la  Critique.

Metropolis Cinema Association is pleased to welcome again the Critics' Week in its 48th edition.

Co-organized with the French Cultural Mission and in partnership with Beirut DC, this event will offer the Lebanese public, and for the 5th consecutive year, the pleasure to discover, avant-première in Beirut, 6 feature films, 8 shorts and a medium-length film, all selected at the latest Cannes Film Festival 2009.

Films of different natures and equally different genres, filmmakers that are asserting, each in his singular approach, their way to observe a world in constant ebullition.

A gentle French film with a Western touch (Farewell Gary), a day in the life of a family in the Southern Chilean countryside (Huacho), a strong and humanitarian gaze in a Lost Persons Area, a story worthy of the Cohen Brothers transposed into a South American Village (Bad Day to Go Fishing), a magnificent visual poem that emerges from the Iraqi Kurdistan (Whisper with the Wind), a fiction scattered on several continents, in a quest a re-enchantment of the world (Altiplano) and a reflection on the paradoxical state of violence carried by Vincent Gallo and dominated by the music of Anthony and the Johnsons (1989).

7 screenings, each preceded by a short film, to discover new young talents, because that's where the true mission of the Critics' Week lies.

SYNOPSIS:
In an inner city neighborhood deserted by its inhabitants. And yet, some people have decided to stay, such as Francis, a hardworking factory worker, his son Samir just released from jail and Maria, the neighbor, who lives with her son José, who believes his father is Gary Cooper.

SYNOPSIS :
Mam Baldar, l’oncle aux ailes, exerce depuis bien longtemps le métier de postier dans différents villages de montagne au Kurdistan Irakien. Mais il n’est pas un postier comme les autres puisqu’il transmet des sons et des paroles enregistrés sur des cassettes. Un jour, un commandant des partisans, loin de chez lui, demande d’enregistrer les premiers pleurs de son enfant qui va naître prochainement. En se rendant dans ce village, le postier découvre que tous les enfants ainsi que la femme du commandant ont été conduits dans une vallée éloignée afin d’assurer leur sécurité , et il se met donc en route pour les rejoindre là où ils sont...

Mam Baldar, the winged uncle, is a postman like no other who, for many years, has travelled among the mountainous villages of Iraqi Kurdistan recording and delivering people’s messages. One day, a partisan commander asks him to make a recording of his newborn child’s first cry. Mam sets off to find the commander’s village and, once there, is informed that all the children in the area, as well as the commander’s pregnant wife, have been evacuated to a far-off valley. Mam at once heads out for the valley.

SYNOPSIS :
Grace, photographe de guerre anéantie après un violent incident en Irak, décide de renoncer à son métier. Max, son mari belge, chirurgien spécialiste de la cataracte travaille dans une clinique des yeux dans les Andes au Pérou. Non loin de là, les villageois de Turubamba succombent à des maladies causées par des écoulements de mercure provenant de la mine locale. La jeune Saturnina perd son fiancé dans la contamination. Ignorant la véritable cause de l’épidémie, les villageois tournent leur colère contre les médecins étrangers, et, à l’occasion d’une rixe, Max est tué. Grace entreprend alors un pélerinage jusqu’à l’endroit de sa mort. De son côté, Saturnina prend des mesures drastiques pour protester contre les violences sans fin subies par son peuple et sa terre. Les destinées de Grace et Saturnina vont alors fusionner. Altiplano est un film lyrique et profond sur notre monde, un monde divisé mais pourtant inextricablement uni.

War photographer Grace, devastated after a violent incident in Iraq, renounces her profession. Her Belgian husband, Max, is a cataract surgeon working at an eye clinic in the high Andes of Peru. Nearby, the villagers of Turubamba succumb to illnesses caused by a mercury spill from a local mine. Saturnina, a young woman in Turubamba, loses her fiancé to the contamination. Ignorant of its true source, the villagers turn their rage on the foreign doctors, and in the ensuing riot Max is killed. Grace sets out on a journey of mourning to the place of Max’s death. Saturnina takes drastic measures to protest against the endless violations towards her people and her land. Grace and Saturnina’s destinies merge. Altiplano is a lyrical and probing film about our divided but inextricably linked world.

The newlyweds have already left the party where the guests are still dancing. The bride has bled to death and the groom carries the body. He drags her down the stairs and along a long corridor until they fall down. At the shore the groom gives her away to the river, floating in a boat.

SYNOPSIS :
Une falaise qui surplombe la mer. La silhouette d’un adolescent dans les rochers. Il observe l’entrée d’un luxueux voilier dans la baie. A son bord, un couple, ils ont l’air heureux. Ils vont jeter l’ancre au milieu de la crique. La jeune femme est très belle. L’adolescent va l’épier jusqu’au soir. Un trouble évident s’est emparé de lui. Que fera-t-il à la nuit tombée ? Il semble si démuni et si envieux.

A cliff overhanging the sea. A teenager’s silhouette between the rocks. He is watching the entrance of a luxurious yacht in the bay. On board, a couple, they seem happy. They are dropping the anchor in the cove. The young woman is very beautiful. The teenager is spying on her as night is falling. An obvious emotion has grown in him. What will he do at night? He looks so powerless and envious.

SYNOPSIS :
Rob est de retour chez lui. Cela fait un an que son frère aîné est mort. A son arrivée, il est clair que la famille n’a toujours pas réussi à faire son deuil. Rob entretient des relations compliquées avec son père. Il semblerait que son père lui reproche d’avoir tourné la page trop vite, tandis que Rob ne semble pas vouloir regarder la réalité en face. Pour arriver à communiquer avec son père, Rob décide de lui « imposer » son affection.

Rob is driving back home. It’s been a year since the death of his older brother. Upon Rob’s arrival it is clear that the family is still learning how to cope with their loss. The relationship between Rob and his father is awkward. There is a sense that the father blames Rob for moving on too fast, while Rob’s understanding of the reality, even a year later, is still distorted. Rob decides that in order to get through to his father he’ll have to “force” his affection onto him.

SYNOPSIS :
Une longue journée à la fin de l’été, quatre membres d’une famille paysanne du sud du Chili ont du mal à s’adapter au monde toujours changeant qui les entoure. Un monde où un jeu vidéo ou une nouvelle robe peuvent être aussi précieux qu’un litre de lait ou un verre de vin. Un monde nouveau, globalisé où les frontières entre tradition et modernité s’effacent et où les valeurs se transforment rapidement.

On a long day at the end of summer, four members of a southern Chilean peasant family struggle to adapt to the changing world in which they live in, a world where a video game or a new dress can be as precious as a liter of milk or a glass of wine. A new, global world where boundaries between tradition and modernity are fading and values are quickly chang.

SYNOPSIS :
Qu’arriverait-il si le monde était un train sans conducteur roulant à toute vitesse sur une voie accidentée ? Dans un train bondé, des passagers heureux font la fête sans se soucier du destin qui les attend au détour. Lorsque survient la panne, une lutte des classes aussi amusante qu’impitoyable s’amorce. Il y aura évidemment des victimes, mais à la fin tous seront égaux. Rarement une catastrophe aurait paru si réjouissante !

What would happen if the world were a driverless train thundering recklessly over bumpy tracks? Happy passengers are having a great time on a crowded train, oblivious to the unknown fate that awaits them around the bend. When the effects of the shortage that ensues begin to be felt, the result is a class struggle that is as amusing as it is merciless. Naturally there are victims, but in the end everyone is equal. Rarely has a disaster seemed so delightful!

SYNOPSIS :
Bettina et Marcus vivent un amour passionné et charnel dans une baraque de chantier au milieu d’une plaine traversée d’immenses pylônes haute tension. Tandis que Bettina aspire à une vie plus conventionnelle, loin des fourneaux de la cantine des ouvriers, leur fillette de 9 ans, Tessa, solitaire, s’occupe en ramassant des objets inattendus, petits bouts de rien qu’elle collecte à l’école buissonnière. Un jour, afin de compléter son équipe de techniciens, Marcus engage un ingénieur hongrois, Szabolcs. Contre toute attente, sa venue providentielle amène un nouvel équilibre à leur existence. Mais un tragique accident vient bouleverser les rêves de bonheur de cette famille en quête d’idéal.

Bettina and Marcus, a passionate couple, live in a canteen in the middle of a vast field with endless lines of pylons. Marcus, trying to set up his own business, works as a foreman in the maintenance of these power-lines. Bettina, bored and longing for a better life, runs the canteen for the workingmen. Their nine-years-old daughter Tessa, wanders the industrial area, looking for bits and pieces to occupy her mind, skipping school whenever she can. When Marcus hires a Hungarian engineer Szabolcs to become part of his company, their unconventional way of living takes a new turn. A tragic accident although will shatter everyone’s pursuit of happiness.

Biographies

Marie Amachoukeli, Claire Burger
Marie Amachoukeli et Claire Burger se rencontrent sur les bancs de la Fémis. Marie est issue du département scénario et Claire du département montage. Ensemble, elles réalisent le film Forbach (Grand Prix du Festival de Clermont-Ferrand 2009 / Deuxième prix Cinéfondation au Festival de Cannes 2008), un court-métrage avec des acteurs non professionnels qui interprètent leur propre histoire.

Marie Amachoukeli and Claire Burger met while attending the La Fémis film school in France. Marie was enrolled in the screenwriting department and Claire in the editing department. Together they directed Forbach, a short film with non-professional actors who interpret their own lives. The film won the Grand Prix at the 2009 Clermont-Ferrand Short Film Festival and the 2nd Cinefondation Award at the 2008 Cannes Film Festival.

Patrik Eklund
Né en en 1978 au nord de la Suède, il fait début en réalisation en 2003 avec son film récompensé à plusieurs reprises, One Christmas Morning. Depuis, il a écrit et réalisé Situation Frank, présenté à La Semaine de la Critique en 2007, et Instead of Abracadabra, présenté au Festival de Sundance en 2009 et nominé pour les Guldbagge (Prix de l’Académie Suédoise). He was born in 1978 in the northern parts of Sweden and made his directorial debut in 2003 with the awarded film One Christmas Morning. Dalibor Matanic
Né en 1975 à Zagreb, il y obtient son diplôme de réalisation cinéma et télévision à l’Académie d’Arts Dramatiques. Il est membre de l’Académie Européenne de Cinéma. Il a réalisé cinq longs métrages et plusieurs courts métrages qui ont remporté de nombreux prix internationaux et croates.

Shahram Alidi
Né en 1971 à Sanandaj au Kurdistan Iranien, il s’intéresse à l’écriture et au théâtre et joue dans de nombreuses pièces durant sa scolarité. Il étudie la peinture et le dessin à la faculté des Beaux Arts de l’Université de Téhéran et obtient une maîtrise en 1998. En 2000, il s’intéresse à l’animation et continue ses études à la faculté du cinéma à l’Université de « Honar » à Téhéran. Le Recensement du dernier village son court métrage réalisé en 2003 a obtenu beaucoup de succès dans de nombreux festivals internationaux. Whisper with the Wind est son premier long métrage.

Born in 1971 in Sanandaj in the Iranian Kurdistan, he had a keen interest in writing and played in several theater plays when he was a student. He studied painting and drawing at the Beaux Arts of the University of Teheran and graduated in 1998. In 2000, he took an interest in animation and integrated the faculty of cinema at the “Honar” Universtity in Teheran. His short film The Last Innombrable Village, directed in 2003, encounters a great success in many international festivals. Whisper with the Wind is his first feature film.

Peter Brosens, Jessica Woodworth

De 1993 à 1998, Peter Brosens (né en Belgique en 1962) a produit et co-dirigé sa Trilogie mongole, qui comprend le documentaire State of Dogs, récompensé par le Grand Prix au Festival Visions du Réel de Nyon. Jessica Woodworth (née aux Etats-Unis en 1971) a étudié le théatre classique et la littérature à l’Université de Princeton, puis obtenu un master en documentaire à l’Université de Stanford. Son premier film The Virgin Diaries a été nommé au prix FIPRESCI au Festival du documentaire d’Amsterdam en 2002.

Their first feature Khadak won 20 international awards, including the 2006 Venice Lion of the Future. The film, nominated for the 2007 Sundance Grand Jury Award, was hailed for being “one of the most powerful film meditations ever”. Between 1993 and 1998 Peter Brosens (born in Belgium in 1962) produced and co-directed his Mongolia Trilogy including the acclaimed State of Dogs, winner of the Grand Prix at the Visions du Réel documentary Festival in Nyon. Jessica Woodworth (born in US in 1971) studied classical theatre and literature at Princeton University, then obtained an MA in documentary from Stanford University. Her first film The Virgin Diaries was nominated for the FIPRESCI Award at the 2002 Amsterdam documentary festival.

Pablo Lamar

Gregoire Colin
Né en 1975, il est révélé au grand public en 1991 et nominé pour le Meilleur Espoir aux Césars en 1993. 1994 marque le début de sa riche collaboration avec Claire Denis. A l’âge de vingt ans il réalise une série de films expérimentaux, tournés en vidéo et écrit ses premiers scénarii. Il poursuit son travail d’acteur dans bon nombre de films d’auteur (Rivette, Zonca, Jacquot et Breillat). En 2008 il crée sa société de production Tsilaosa Films. La baie du renard est son premier court métrage.

In his twenties, he directed experimental films and wrote his first scenarios. He kept acting with independent auteurs (Rivette, Zonca, Jacquot, Breillat...). Camilo Matíz

Il a été entièrement tourné en Colombie.

Known as one of the most innovative and creative directors working on the Colombian advertising market, he has won multiple awards (FIAP, NY Festival, Ojo de Iberoamerica, Cannes lLons, Nova...) that bespeak of the aesthetic and conceptual height that he exhibits in each of his finished pieces. His latest endeavor is his first film 1989 shot entirely in Colombia.

Eicke Bettinga
Il est né en Allemagne où il réalise son premier court-métrage à l’âge de quatorze ans. Après avoir travaillé comme assistant-réalisateur, il étudie la réalisation de films à la National Film & Television School sous la direction de Stephen Frears. Shearing, son film de fin d’études, a été sélectionné par la Cinéfondation au Festival de Cannes 2002. Il réalise actuellement son premier long métrage Washing the Bear, basé sur son court-métrage Together.

He was born in Germany where he made his first short film at the age of fourteen. After working as an assistant director he moved on to study MA film directing under Stephen Frears at the National Film & Television School in Great Britiain. Eicke’s graduation short film Shearing was selected for Cinéfondation at the 2002 Cannes Film Festival. He is currently developing his debut feature Washing the Bear, loosely based on his short film Together.

Alejandro Fernández Almendras
Il est né en 1971 à Chillan, dans le sud du Chili. Après avoir obtenu son diplôme de journaliste, il part à New York et étudie à la New School University et the School of Visual Arts. Il a réalisé trois courts métrages dont Lo que trae la lluvia, sélectioné à la Berlinale 2007. Il est également réalisateur de vidéoclips et critique de cinéma. Huacho est son premier long métrage.

Cordell Barker
Né à Winnipeg en 1957, il entre à l’ONF en 1982 et y signe un premier film, The Cat Came Back (1988), puis Strange Invaders (2001). Ces deux comédies lui valent deux nominations pour l’Oscar du meilleur court métrage d’animation et plus de trente prix internationaux. Également connu pour ses campagnes publicitaires, il collabore une troisième fois avec l’ONF pour Runaway.

Caroline Strubbe
Née en 1965, elle étudie le Cinéma à la ‘Escuela Cinematografica’ à Barcelone puis à l’IAD à Louvain-la-Neuve. Après ses études, elle produit Le garçon d’appartement, une pièce mise en scène par Gérard Lauzier. Au même moment, elle coréalise Une mouche dans la salade, Shocking Manjira and the Cardboard Box et Un portrait de la Belgique, trois documentaires à succès diffusés sur Arte. Son premier court métrage de fiction Melomen remporte plusieurs prix dans les festivals du monde entier. Deux ans plus tard, son moyen métrage Taxi Dancer remporte la mention spéciale du jury à Sundance. Le scénario de Lost Persons Area est sélectionné aux sessions EAVE, au Cinemart et au Berlinale Coproduction Market. Elle participe aussi au Binger Lab ‘Acting for Directors’ de Judith Weston.
