Between the Abundance and Scarcity of Images

Where do the boundaries of genocide end? What is the dividing line between those who experience genocide directly and those who experience it through mediated forms? And how have we come to rely on terminology that subordinates what unfolds before us to our intellectual machinery, rather than contesting that machinery? This seminar takes as its point of departure the concept of “excessive genocide,” which is often transmitted through images and by the perpetrators of violence themselves, permeating the realms of memory, imagination, and everyday life.

أين تنتهي حدود الإبادة؟ وما الحدّ الفاصل بين مَن يعيش الإبادة بالمباشَر، ومَن يعيشها بالوساطة؟ وكيف لجأنا إلى مصطلحات تُخضع المشهد لماكينتنا الفكرية، عوضَ معاركة هذه الماكينة؟ تنطلق الندوة من مفهوم «الإبادة الفائضة»، التي غالباً ما تنتقل عبر الصورة، ومُرتكب العنف نفسه، وتسري في عوالم الذاكرة والمخيّلة والمُعاش اليومي.
