The Cinema on the road project aims to reach children and youth, who do not have access to films as an educational tool. With this initiative, we want to give children in Lebanese public schools and refugee camps the opportunity to explore a new world and raise the interest of films as a form of self-expression. This project builds on the embassy’s experience with screening films for children and youth in Lebanon over the past 2 years

- Rolf Holmboe, Ambassador of Denmark to Lebanon.

Cinema on the Road is a film literacy project in Lebanon for children aged 5 and above, registered in public schools or living in informal settlements. It is organized by the Metropolis Association in partnership with the Embassy of Denmark in Lebanon and the Danish Film Institute. The first edition of this project was launched in June 2015.

The program consists of three parts: the outreach screenings in refugee camps and informal settlements, the mobile cine-club for public schools, and the Metropolis Youth Film Festival. The aim of the program is to reach youth in Lebanon and improve their access to culture.

The Outreach Screenings consist of organizing film screenings over a four-month period for Lebanese, Palestinian and Syrian children living in refugee camps and informal settlements in Lebanon. This project is organized in close collaboration with local NGOs and is free of charge for the children. To provide the kids with a pleasant atmosphere and the opportunity to exchange about their favorite scenes after the film, each screening is followed by refreshments and a Q&A session. Four movies are chosen in three age ranges (2+, 7+ and 12+) and screened to kids aged 2 years and older. Each film has an educational kit with learning material destined for the teachers/facilitators, guiding them in introducing and discussing the film. In order to achieve this goal, 76 screenings were organized for the 2016/2017 edition in 11 locations situated in Tripoli, Tyr, Saida, Bekaa, and Beirut reaching over 2,200 children.

The Mobile Cine-Club focuses on the public school sector by proposing film screenings to children from Lebanese public schools. This segment of the project requires coordination with the Ministry of Education as the screenings take place within a normal school day and are of an educational value. The films fall into well-defined age categories and are free of charge for the students. The program proposes films in Arabic or without dialog, whilst also offering films in foreign languages as a support to the French and English classes given at the schools. Following the schools’ registration to the 2016/2017 edition, the project manager was able to reach 1,500 students in the school districts of Beirut, Nabatieh, Tripoli, and Zahlé.
