On his quest for happiness and fortune, Per Sidenius leaves the countryside and his strict, religious upbringing and moves to the capital to forge a career for himself as an engineer, and to reform society within the materialistic framework of the industrialized world and modern revolutionary ideas.  

À la recherche du bonheur et de la fortune, Per Sidenius quitte la campagne et son éducation religieuse stricte et part pour la capitale afin de forger sa carrière en tant qu’ingénieur et reformer la société dans le cadre matériel d’un monde industriel et d’idées révolutionnaires modernes.
