أيها الأصدقاء الأعزاء،

كما تعلمون، لقد أقفلت صالة متروبوليس أمبير صوفيل أبوابها .على مدى السنوات الإحدى عشرة الماضية، إستضافت سينما صوفيل معظم عروضنا ومهرجاناتنا، ونحن اليوم بصدد البحث عن صالة جديدة تستقبل مشاريعنا المقبلة. وفيما نبحث عن أشكال ومساحات جديدة لاستكمال أنشطتنا، نود أن نتوجه إليكم ببضع كلمات لنوضح بعض النقاط المتعلقة بجمعية متروبوليس: 

منذ العام ٢٠٠9، كانت جمعية متروبوليس قد تولت حصرياً مسؤولية برمجة صالة صوفيل وبقيت شركة أمبير تتولى مهمة تشغيلها وإدارتها مالياً وتقنياً. وقد قررت مؤخرا شركة أمبير منفردة بإقفال صالتَيها. 

تأسست جمعية متروبوليس في العام ٢٠٠٦ بهدف عرض مختلف أنواع السينما في لبنان، أفلام لن تعرفها أبداً صالات السينما التجارية. نحن نؤمن بأهمية السينما كمساحة عامة تصنع ذاكرة جماعية وتعمل على مشاركتها. وعلى الرغم من أننا لن ننظم من الآن فصاعدا أيّ أنشطة في صالتَي صوفيل، فإننا لا نزال ناشطين من خلال البرامج المخصصة لجمهور الشباب في مختلف أنحاء البلاد، وذلك من خلال مشروع "سينماتيك بيروت" والورشات التدريبية التي  تضمّ مشاركين من جميع أنحاء المنطقة العربية.

وفيما نعمل جاهدين لبلوغ سبُل جديدة تجسّد هذا المشروع، نودّ أن نشكر كل من وقفوا إلى جانبنا في كل هذه الأعوام ولا سيّما خلال هذه الأشهر الصعبة المنصرمة. دعمكم لنا هو أساس استمرار الجمعية وأنشطتها، بصرف النظر عن المكان الذي نقدّم فيه عروضنا. 

على ضوء الانتفاضة الشعبية الجارية في لبنان والتي انطلقت في ١٧ تشرين الأول ٢٠١٩، نجد من الضروري إعادة تقييم أولوياتنا وإعادة هيكلة وسائط عملنا للتوصل إلى طرقٍ جديدة للمقاومة. لقد شهدنا في السنوات الأخيرة إلغاءاً قسرياً للكثير من المساحات والمبادرات الثقافية بسبب الوضع الاقتصادي المتردي في بلادنا. لذا، نودّ أن نكرر ونؤكد موقفنا من الطبقة السياسية الحاكمة ومن فسادها الذي قادنا إلى الأزمة الاقتصادية الحالية، ومن إهمالها المتعمَّد للسياسات الثقافية والعامة.

سنبقيكم مطلعين على أخبارنا ونتطلع إلى رؤيتكم جميعاً في الشارع وفي القريب العاجل أمام شاشة كبيرة!

Dear Friends,

As you might already know, Metropolis Empire Sofil cinemas has closed down. This cinema has been home to most Metropolis screenings, festivals and events for the past 11 years. Today we are left without a venue to host our upcoming programs. Whilst we look for a new space and new ways to pursue our activity, we would like to clarify certain points:

Since 2009, the Sofil cinemas were programmed solely by the Metropolis Association. The venue was managed technically, financially and operationally by the Empire Cinema Circuit, who took the decision to shut it down without prior notice.  

Metropolis was created in 2006 with a drive to show different kinds of cinema in Lebanon, films that never make it onto the commercial screens. We stand by the importance of cinema as a public space where collective memory is shared and created. Whilst we will no longer hold any activities at the Sofil Cinemas, we will maintain our young audience programs throughout the country, as well as the cinematheque project and our regional training initiatives.

As we work towards new incarnations for this project, we would like to thank all those who have stood by us through the years and especially during these last difficult months. Your support allows the association and its activities to keep going regardless of the space we program in. 

In light of the ongoing popular uprising in Lebanon which began on October 17^th 2019, we are inspired to re-evaluate our priorities and rethink our working structure, in order to find new modes of resistance. In the past few years, and as a result of the difficult economic situation, we have witnessed the forced closure of many cultural initiatives. We would like to reiterate our position against the ruling political class, its deliberate negligence of public and cultural policies, and the blatant corruption it has conducted and encouraged, which has led to the current crisis.

We will keep you updated on our news and we look forward to seeing you in the streets, and very soon in front of a big screen!
