Jocelyne Saab's archives can be found in different parts of the world, but nothing can be found in Lebanon, the country from which she originated and which she filmed extensively throughout her career as a documentarian and artist. As the rightful owner of her work, the Jocelyne Saab Association wished to pursue Jocelyne Saab's fundamental interest in her country’s heritage. By choosing to restore the filmmaker's oeuvre in Lebanon, the Association acquired equipment, established long-term partnerships and was able to train a team of technicians in the process of film restoration, who are now able to restore Lebanese cinema heritage in Lebanon. This presentation will trace the process of restoration undergone by the Association, focusing on the various questions that the team had to address along the way and will include the screening of “Lebanese, Hostage of Their City” (1982). 

About the Speaker:

Mathilde Rouxel is a researcher specializing in Arab cinema and a programmer. She holds a PhD in cinema from the Université Sorbonne Nouvelle. A former collaborator of Jocelyne Saab, she published in 2015 the first monograph devoted to the Lebanese director (Jocelyne Saab, la mémoire indomptée, Dar An-Nahar, Beirut) and then co-edited with Stefanie Van de Peer ReFocus: The Films of Jocelyne Saab (Edinburgh University Press, 2021). Following the death of the filmmaker, she founded in 2019 with the son of the artist, Nessim Ricardou-Saab, the Jocelyne Saab Association and has been directing for the past four years, with the help of her collaborator Jinane Mrad, the project of valorization of the work of Jocelyne Saab.

يمكن العثور على أرشيف جوسلين صعب في أماكن مختلفة من العالم؛ لكن لا يوجد شيء من هذا الأرشيف في لبنان، وهو البلد الذي وُلدت ونشأت فيه وأنجزت أفلاماً كثيرة عنه طوال مسيرتها المهنية كفنانة ومخرجة أفلام وثائقية. بصفتها المالك الشرعي لأعمال هذه المخرجة، أرادت "مؤسَّسة جوسلين صعب" استكمال اهتمام جوسلين صعب العميق بتراث بلدها. تنفيذاً لقرارها ترميم أفلام صعب في لبنان، أمّنت المؤسّسةُ معدّات، وعقدت شراكات طويلة الأمد، ودرّبت فريقاً من التقنيين على عمليّة الترميم – الذين يستطيعون اليوم ترميم أفلام لبنانيّة في لبنان. ستتتبّع دراسةُ الحالة هذه عمليّةَ الترميم التي أنجزتها المؤسّسة، وستركِّز على مختلف الأسئلة التي واجهت الفريق خلال عمله.
