The creation of the Arab Film Club in 1973 in Beirut testifies to the growing importance of alternative Arab cinema at the time. It sought to counter the lack of visibility of these new films in cinemas. By retracing the history of the Arab Film Club in Beirut, this presentation explores a little-known part of the history of cinema in Lebanon and questions the politicization of cinephilia in the early 1970s in the country, as well as the current patrimonialization of some of the films made or screened by the members of this initiative.
This lecture is the presentation of a research article commissioned by Metropolis Cinema Association in the framework of the Cinematheque Beirut project, which will be published online in February 2023.
About the Speaker:
Anaïs Farine is a cinema studies researcher and a film curator. She holds a Ph.D from the University of La Sorbonne Nouvelle – Paris III. Her Ph.D thesis focused on the so-called “Euro-Mediterranean dialogue” and its Filmic Imaginary (1995 – 2017). Her writings have been published in Kohl, Cinematheque Beirut, Trouble dans les collections, Ettijahat, Débordements, The Funambulist Magazine, Africultures, and Aniki, among others. She is a member of the organizing committee of the Festival Ciné-Palestine (Paris). Anaïs Farine is currently a Visiting Postdoctoral Fellow at the Orient Institut Beirut. She joined the OIB in October 2022 and is currently working on the research project "The making of “Arab alternative cinema” and its audiences: Babelsberg, Beirut, Damascus, Leipzig".

شكَّل تأسيس "النادي السينمائي العربي في بيروت" في عام 1973 مؤشِّراً بارزاً على تزايد أهميّة السينما العربية البديلة وقتذاك. سعى هذا النادي إلى التصدّي لتغييب هذا النوع السينمائي الجديد من صالات العرض. من خلال التركيز على تاريخ "النادي السينمائي العربي في بيروت"، تسلّط هذه المحاضرة الضوءَ على جانب غير معروف من تاريخ السينما في لبنان، وتطرح أسئلة تتعلّق بتسييس الممارسات السينيفيليّة في لبنان في أوائل السبعينيات، وبالممارسات الراهنة المُتمثِّلة بتحويل بعضٍ من الأفلام التي أخرجها أو عرضها أعضاء ذلك النادي، إلى تراث سينمائي.
هذه المحاضرة هي عرض تقديمي لمقالة بحثيّة كُتِبت بطلبٍ من جمعيّة "متروبوليس سينما"، وذلك في إطار مشروع "سينماتيك بيروت". ستُنشر المقالة على الويب في شهر شباط/ فبراير 2023.
أناييس فارين هي حالياً زميلة ما بعد الدكتوراه في "المعهد الألماني للأبحاث الشرقيّة". التحقت بالمعهد في تشرين الأول/ أكتوبر 2022. تعمل حالياً على مشروع بحثي عنوانه "صناعة "السينما العربية البديلة" وجمهورِها: بابلسبيرغ، بيروت، دمشق، لايبزيغ".
