La Petite Marchande d'allumettes

On Christmas Eve, a young match seller peddles her wares to indifferent pedestrians. Battling the harsh cold and the snow, she reluctantly lights her matches one by one, hoping to find some comfort. In a little while, hallucinations engulf her: Christmas trees parade before her eyes, followed by giant toys – dancers, wooden soldiers, a pig and a clever bear. Soon, death joins the spectacle too. However, it does not belong to the realm of dreams...

Le soir de Noël, une petite vendeuse d’allumettes propose sa marchandise aux passants indifférents. Agressée par le froid et la neige, elle se résout à enflammer ses allumettes l’une après l’autre, avec l’espoir d’en tirer quelque réconfort. Bientôt, des hallucinations l’assaillent. Sous ses yeux défilent des arbres de Noël, puis des jouets géants – des danseuses, des soldats de bois, un cochon, un ours savant. La Mort, bientôt, se mêle au spectacle. Mais elle n’appartient pas, elle, au domaine du rêve…

إنها عشية عيد الميلاد. تشقى بائعة أعواد ثقاب صغيرة في محاولة بيع بضاعتها لغير المبالين من المارة. يصفعها الصقيع ويلفحها الثلج من كل صوب فتحاول تدفئة نفسها ببعض أعواد الثقاب. تشعل عودًا تلو الآخر ولكن تحت وطأة الألم، تحملها الهلوسات إلى عالم آخر. تتلاشى أمام عينيها أشجار عيد الميلاد وألعاب عملاقة – راقصات وجنود خشبيين وخنزير ودب ذكي. وسرعان ما ينضمّ الموت للمشهد. ومع ذلك، فهو لا ينتمي إلى عالم الأحلام...
